Professor George Bakris

George Bakris is Professor of Medicine and Director of the American Heart Association Comprehensive Hypertension Center at UChicago Medicine. He has published over 1000 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the areas of diabetic kidney disease, hypertension and nephropathy progression. Professor Bakris has also served on many national guideline committees, including the Joint National Committee 7 (JNC 7), the American Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guideline Committee, the National Kidney Foundation (K-DOQI), and the KDOQI Blood Pressure and Diabetes Guideline committees. Professor Bakris is the past president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and the American Society of Hypertension.
He did fellowships in both nephrology and clinical pharmacology and is the recipient of the American Heart Association Irvine Page-Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois Lifetime Service Award. He also serves on numerous journal editorial boards and is the current Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nephrology and the nephrology/hypertension section in UpToDate.
